On March 12, 2019 the Treasury Laws Amendment (Enhancing Whistleblower Protections) Bill 2018 received Royal Assent.
The law takes effect from 1 July 2019, with a six-month transitional period in which public and large propriety companies must ensure that they have a compliant Whistleblower Policy in place.
What this means to my organisation and staff
It is important that your staff are trained on what protections are available to whistleblowers, who disclosures can be made to, how your organisation will protect and support whistleblowers, and how you will ensure fair treatment of employees who are mentioned in disclosures. There are significant penalties for breaches of the law.
By providing a whistleblowing policy, employees of an organisation can feel confident in reporting unethical conduct, dishonest or illegal activity.
